Philippe JULIEN, born in 1959, is a graduate of “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie” (Nancy, France) and of Paris VI University (“Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris“-Paris Institute of Earth Physics-) where he got his PhD in seismology and rock mechanics. He worked for 2 years as a researcher in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) in the academic observatory of “La Soufrière” volcano.
He began his career with Total in 1987 as a Research Geophysicist at the Paris Headquarters. After 3 years in Norway (1991-1993), where he was involved in oil and gas exploration and petroleum field appraisal, he came back to the Total Headquarters to lead the Total research geophysical team. In 1996 he took the position of Chief Geophysicist for Mahakam Exploration in Indonesia, before being assigned to Pau (France) as Total Corporate Geophysical Research Manager (2000-2003) following the merge between Total, Fina and Elf.
After a while as Geophysical Advisor in the Total Geophysical Department (2004), he was then appointed as Geoscience Training and Technical Communication Manager, before taking on the responsibility in 2007 of the newly created position of Exploration and Production Communication Project Manager.
In 2008, he has been appointed Vice President International Upstream Coordinator dealing with the involvement of Total in international events.
Philippe JULIEN belongs to the board of the “European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers” (EAGE) as Education Officer. He is Associate Professor in the IFP School (Paris, France) and regularly gives courses in various prestigious academic institutions (Paris School of Mines, National Superior School of Geology,…). He has participated in more than 20 international publications in the fields of structural geology, rock mechanics, seismology, petroleum seismics, innovative training and human resources. He is President of the executive committee of “Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre” (Institute of Earth Physics) in Strasbourg.
